Frequently asked questions

1. Do I need Adobe Illustrator to convert an AI file?

No, the conversion runs on our server, so the .ai file is all you need.

2. Why didn’t my AI file convert?

The converter reads PDF-compatible .ai files. Recent versions of Illustrator save files this way by default, with Create PDF Compatible File checked in the Save As options. Very old .ai files, or files saved without PDF compatibility to keep them smaller, can’t be read. To fix it, open the file in Illustrator and save it again with the option checked.

3. Will gradients, blends, and text convert exactly?

Not all of them. Gradients aren’t preserved at the moment, but you can rebuild them in SVGator and animate them. Text isn’t currently supported, so convert it to outlines in Illustrator before you save, and it will come through as shapes.

4. Do you store my AI file?

No, your file is saved to a temporary location only for the few seconds the conversion takes, then deleted right away. Nothing is kept once the SVG is sent back to you.

5. What if my AI file has more than one artboard?

The converter uses only the first artboard. An .ai file can hold several artboards, but at the moment it’s not possible to pick a different one. To convert another design, move its artboard to the top of the Artboards panel in Illustrator and save the file again.
